Question / Issue
What is Transportation Driver Coverage?

Answer / Solution

More and more carriers are attempting to deal with the exposure when an insured uses their personal auto as an Uber or Lyft driver (aka Transportation Network). Most personal auto policies excludes carrying persons or property for a fee, which does not present a problem because Transportation Networks are providing coverage to their drivers when a passenger is in their car.

Where the problem comes in is that some carriers feel there is an increased exposure to an accident when their insured is on the road with a smartphone in hand waiting for someone to request a ride as well as once the request comes in, the driver is in route to pick the passenger up.

To address these concerns, carriers are electing one of the following:

  1. The carrier refuses to write the policy if the insured is using the vehicle in a Transportation Network.
  2. The carrier surcharges the policy
  3. The carrier offers a Transport Driver Coverage endorsement which provides coverage when the driver is logged into the Transportation Network up until the passenger enters the car.
  4. The carrier offers a Limited Transport Driver Coverage endorsement which provides coverage only up until the driver receives a request for a ride.
